The Hands and Feet of Christ
1 Corinthians 12, Paul says:
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body – whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many….”18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body…”27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
The Emmaus Community needs to show others what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing if members of the Emmaus Community, representing the Body of Christ, would support each other and their churches in local outreach activities? Our website has a link to a page where the Community can send information and perhaps a link to their own web page with more details into their event. This may look like “the Emmaus Community Events” page, but the idea behind it is to open doors to share “Christian Action” events and invite members of the Community to come serve or attend a talk or event, and in turn, invite others (non-Emmaus people?) to come as well. Here are some ideas:
Does your church serve the local community by opening its doors and serving meals to the homeless in the area? Perhaps your church needs additional helping hands – the Emmaus Community could be those extra hands.
Does your church want to expand its ministry by offering ESL courses and needs more people to help translate or facilitate? Perhaps there is a Community member who wants to introduce this at his/her church, but needs a place to start. Volunteering at another church to learn and support the program, and then taking it back to their home church is a great way to spread a ministry.
Perhaps your church is hosting a Christian music concert, couples seminars, other conferences, speakers or a talk from a missionary – letting the Emmaus community know about your event can spread the word, support your church monetarily, and open new ministry avenues and ideas for another member’s church.
Does your church have a food bank or free store? Perhaps the supply is getting low. Reaching out to the Emmaus community may bring in extra food or clothing or furniture.
Does your church host a Ladies’ Tea to benefit another organization? A group of Emmaus ladies may want to attend.
Does your church participate in Habitat for Humanity? A group of strong, building-skilled Emmaus members could help at your event and perhaps bring that back into their own church to start working with HFH.
Annual Spaghetti Dinners – what a great way to fellowship with others and perhaps a way to open some dialog about making a Walk?
Does your church have a Free Prom Attire ministry, where low-income people in your community can “shop” for prom attire at reduced prices? Perhaps you are collecting gently used prom dresses, shows or jewelry – reach out to the Community.
There are so many ways to open doors for others toward Christian Action and reach out to local communities. And there are many who have attended Walks and asked “How can I be the hands and feet of Christ?” and have no idea how to get started. By sharing our events, it may inspire members and to take these ministries back to their churches and start new ministries there.
